I agree with mirfak in that I think it sounds like the name of a muppet's character... or maybe a big shaggy dog - I can totally see "The Adventures of Moffat" as a children's book, akin to Clifford the Big Red Dog.
Also, it's bringing to mind "The Moffats" which is some band I remember from my youth ("The Moffats" is a apparently a book series, as well)

Ha, the Moffats was the first thing that came to mind. I had forgotten about them completely (never listened to that kind of music) until I saw the name here. Weird.
