It is my style, but I don't like how it ends in the sound "lie." I just don't think that's an attractive final sound. I much prefer the sounds of Elias and Elijah.
As for your second question, probably not. I think that unless they are directly related (Gabriel/Gabrielle, Eric/Erica, Rene/Renee), it's kind of silly to use a female name to honor a male person or vice versa. Even then I'm iffy on it. I'm in the boat that if you don't want to (or can't, in this case) use the exact name of the person than there's not really a point.
