I like Eli quite a bit. I love how it has such a "long sound" for such a short, simple name.
My mother is an Elizabeth, and I have considered Eli to honor her. It works for me, but more because they're both E- names than because of any other perceived connection between them. Basically, I think it works if you're a liberal honorer like me. If your idea of honoring is more strict, then I think it's iffy.
