[Opinions] Re: WDYT of Gerard?
I adore Gerard! I, too, have familial connections with the name (on my mother's Irish side).
It is a handsome blend of durability and robustness, but is also very refined, classic, and artistic. As for nicknames... Ger, Gerry, and Jerry are prominent options, of course. I think you could get away with Rory, too. If I were to use Gerard (which I have heavily considered), Ardy (Ardi, Ardie, Arde, perhaps Arty?), Ard (Art?) and Ardio would tempt me (it may not be what I would consistently use, but I think it'd be a "fun" and playful diminutive). You might be able to get away with Rocky or Rob, if you're up to the stretch.
