[Opinions] Gallagher
I'm kinda liking Gallagher for a boy (I feel I always just need to be extra clear on gender, what with a girl named Alec running around!). I'd love to hear your thoughts, impressions, and combos. Especially if you have more to say than disliking it because it's a surname. :) I know, I know...Three boys nappin', one mama namenerdin'

Gallagher has a fun, spunky feel to it. My first thought upon reading it was this joke: Where do you find a turtle with no legs?
Answer: Right where you left him! This was a joke the comedian, Gallagher, told when I saw his show at our local fair grounds years ago. Most people associate him with his "Sledge-o-matic" but I never really thought that was terribly funny. What was terribly funny was the long bit he did pointing out the ridiculousness of the inconsistencies in the English language; he really had me laughing hard. Yes, about words. As far as combos go, the only one that jumped up at me was Gallagher Ivan. The other thing that happened was my heart swooning at the idea of Galahad. What do you think? I'm not saying Gallagher wouldn't work; I just can't help adoring Galahad. :)

Hm, Galahad feels very different to me. Whereas Gallagher has a fun, spunky feel, Galahad feels a historic. Still adventurous, but somehow less appealing to me. Good thought though

Gallagher makes me think of Gilligan. Like in Gilligan's Island. :P I will also say that Gallagher just feels awkward in my mouth to say as a first name. Hey, Gallagher? How's it going, Gallagher? Ehh...it just feels like I'm calling someone by his last name, not his first name. :/

I knew a boy name Gallagher in high school. I like it and find it very handsome. I know about the Gallagher that mirfak brought up, but I don't think of him when I hear it. I just think of curly-haired Gallagher from high school.

It makes me think of the comedian so I am going to have to pass. However, I do find it refreshing and can't say that I have ever heard it as a given name.

It reminds me of the Gallagher brothers (Liam and Noel) from the rock band Oasis, which isn't such a good association. I like their music, but they're not people I'd want to name my kid after. Although you probably don't have that association, so it wouldn't matter. :) Objectively, I think it's ok but a bit surnamey. How about the similar sounding Callaghan or Callahan?

You're right, I don't have that association. I do like Callahan/Callaghan too. There's just something about the non-n ending of Gallagher that I'm enjoying.

The Sledge-O-Matic ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gasAFyonmmII guess I must be that old. I guess nobody has heard of Gallagher anymore.Anyway that is what I think of, and also reading about Ash's nickname problem it occurs to me that a Gallagher might end up being called "Gagger" or "Gaga" and those are the best nicks for it that I can come up with. Well ... sometimes the best nicknames are ironic.

I have heard of him and that was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread.

I guess I'm not old enough! That's actually the year I was born.I wouldn't mind Gallag or Galgher, so I think Gagger and Gaga could probably be avoided.

I must be old, too. That video was the first thing that came to mind when I saw Gallagher.

I'm old, too.

I never thought of Gallagher but I kinda like it. You might have a problem with people spelling it Galager perhaps. Anyways, it definitely wouldn't be mistaken for a girls name.I'm not sure about your style but I like the sound of Gallagher Munro and Gallagher Rhys

I like both your combos.

I love it:) I have four boys, all g's...yes, I know...I'm crazy:)It was not planned that way, just ended up being like that with the names we liked! But anyways....with our last one, I was seriously considering Gallagher. I like how it sounds, it's unusual, and still think its a distinctively "boy" name! I don't like girls being named a boy name and etc... My only drawback was a nickname. I didn't want my other boys calling the baby "gal" :) so we ended up going with Gage...and now they call him "gagey"... So that goes to show you no matter what name you decide on for certain reasons, nicknames will come out eventually! :)

Four Gs?? Do share, if you please. :)You are right that Gal is not an awesome nickname. I was wondering about Gallag, actually. But maybe some other options will come to me yet.

Gregory is my oldest:) he is named after both mine and my husbands fathers. Then I have twins boys, Gavin and Grady. And we actually had three sets of names we could never decide on, so we ended up waiting until they were born. As Gavin was born first, when I looked at him, he didn't look like either of the other names we had picked for the first twin born...so they ended up being Gavin and Grady... Then with our youngest, we didn't want him to feel left out, so he ended up being Gage:) so yes...when I am trying to get someone, I usually end up calling at least three names before I get the right one!

Yeah, but that happens even when your kids all start with different letters. :)
Actually, as far as all Gs are concerned, you diversified other sounds pretty well! Were the other twin name options also matching letters? Are you intending to be done having kids? Or are you going to have to come up with more Gs yet?

Yeah, the other twin names were same beginning letter, but not g. I honestly don't even remember what they were, now. I should have written them down:) I do remember one set started with D, and one with an H... I always hated it when twins names didn't begin with the same letter! Lol. I don't suppose that it really matters, but when I was pregnant, it was a HUGE deal:)
Anyways... I don't really know if I'm done:) I wouldn't mind one more, I always wanted a big family, and yes, I know, four boys is a big family:) I'd love a girl, but if. to, another boy would be fun, too. If I did, I can't help it, I love the name Gracelin. So that would probably be a girls name...I know it's pretty popular, but it's been one of my favorite names with each pregnancy, and at this point, why not? Lol...and for a boy, it would probably end up being Grayson, Gallagher, Galloway or Gunner... Not much else I like in the "G" category!
