[Opinions] Shyamala
Shyamala
I met a woman with this name. She pronounces it..
No, I'm not going to tell you yet. I wonder if anyone knows, or if her pronunciation is non-standard. How would you pronounce it?
I don't really care for it myself, but what do you think?

SCHA-mah-lah. Thats the proper Indian way to prn it
Oh you are here! I was hoping you'd have something to say about it. Do you mean there's both an S sound and a hard ch sound (like in chin)?
Why is the Y in there? Heh.. that seems like a silly question, but I wonder if it being there changes the pronunciation?
thanks.

I've never heard M. Night Shyamalin's name pronounced out loud.
Anyway yah, y'all are right. She says it SH(EE)AH-ma-la. The Y sound kind of gets blended in, so it's basically SHAHmala. I was confused by that for a bit when I saw the spelling.
By the way, she's a WASP, if anyone was curious. I haven't gotten a chance to find out the personal story of her name, I thought it was rude enough to push for the spelling when I'd just met her.

I'd say it as "SHAH-mah-lah", because it looks like a feminization of M. Night Shyamalin's last name.
I don't like it much, but the director is cool, so I've got good associations with it.

I would see shee-a-ma-la or shya-ma-la...
I'd say it shy-AH-muh-luh, but I don't really care for it.
