Gal + lilly = girly sounding name. I knew a girl named Galilee also, but I think it sounds very feminine. Gil out of Galilee does not make sense. Galileo is an improvement, more masculine, and he could be Leo, but Gil is still not a natural nn.
I like Gilead, and think it would be the best option. I love the balm in Gilead reference, and Gil is a much more natural nn. Gilead is unusual, but not too out there, and much more masculine.
Have you considered Gilchrist? I love that name.
