[Facts] Benedikt
I just thought it might be interesting for you that in Germany the name Benedikt was used twice as much for newborn boys in the year 2005 than in 2004. In 2004 the name was on position 50 of the 100 favourite names and changed to position 37 in 2005. This was the greatest change in the list in this year.
Most experts agree that the popularity of the name results from the new Pontifex Benedikt XVI. who is German.
I was wondering if the name Benedikt and variants of this name are more popular in other countries too. Does anybody of you know about it?

Benedict hasn't been popular where I live in years, and I suppose we have a reason- Benedict Arnold, who some (like me) consider a traitor. Anyway, I've never anyone in the US named Benedict or Benedikt.

In Czech Republic the name Benedikt was on position 161 in 1991-2000 (for newborn boys). Unfortunately I don´t have more recent informations.
...The character in Much Ado About Nothing is Benedict? I've never met anyone with the name in the US.

The Swedish variant of Benedikt is Bengt (pr. BENG-t; e as in "bet" and ng as in "song"), but it hasn't been common since the 1950's. An unusual female variant is Bengta, but it hasn't been popular since the 1910's-1920's.
