[Facts] African Name Lamonia
According to family letters, my 5th great grandmother was a slave from Africa. Her name was Lamonia or Lamoneha. I am trying to find out what the name means and the find the correct spelling of the name. She most likely came from west Africa.

Where was she enslaved? Is the name, to your knowledge, an African name or a slave name given to her by her sellers and or masters? This information will help.
She was enslaved in Virginia and then Kentucky. Lamonia (or Lamoneha) was her African name. I think her slave name was 'Pigeon." Lamonia's daughter said that her mother was a princess who was lured aboard a slave ship.
I don't know that this is necessarily a link, but there is a similar name Alemonia (http://www.behindthename.com/submit/name/alemonia). It is a Roman mythology name and it is possible that the name made its way to Africa as the Romans were quite prolific in their conquests.
Other than that, I can't come up with much information.
