My Grandfather was named Mario (and I know several, but my family is from Italy).
In fact, his brother is named Luigi, but they were carpenters not plumbers. :)
I think it totally works today. I have known young guys with the name and most go by Mo, but a couple go by the full Mario or Rio.
If I had to combo the name, I might pick something that is generally European, rather than strictly Italian.
Such as:
Mario Andrea
Mario Leone
Mario Dante
Mario Luca
Mario Raul
Mario Gian
Mario Isaiah
Mario Vincent
Mario Simon
Mario Walter
