There was a comic strip called Lil' Abner. I think from like, the 40's.

Lil Abner is what I immediately thought of and all I can think of when I hear the name Abner. I'm sure it's because I'm older, but I must say that Lil Abner lasted quite a bit longer than the 1940s. It ran from 1934 to 1977.
