If you tried that with any name at all, it'd look weird. Proves nothing.
Glen is fine, if dated. I hear 1930s-1940s jazz in the background. And it's no worse than any other geographical/topographical name and better than many. I prefer it as a stand-alone male name, rather than a shortened form of Glenda or, believe it or not, Glennifer.

Glen seems a little dorky to me. Like Wade or Don. Also reminds me of a guy who stalked me. But it's alright. Not so bad. A decent name. I don't really care for the GL sound, like in Glynis, Gladys, Glenda. Never have.
As for the trick - poor Glen, I wonder why they picked on him. You could do it with your own name. There's a term for the effect ...

I really don't like it. To me it seems so weak, snively and greasy-haired.
I think it sounds much sleeker on a girl. It's actually sort of nice there. On a boy, BLECH!!

With just the one n it doesn't look quite right. I do like it with two n's, especially as a middle name. My brother-in-law's name is Glenn.
Don't hate, don't love.
Just one of those names I can tolerate but will always be very "men" to me.

The article was funny, though I didn't agree with it.
I think you could put any name in there and it would work as humor (Heidi, Heidi, Heidi, Heidi, Hiedi, Heidi, Heidi... did you even notice the mispelling?)
In any case, Glen is one of those names like Rose, Cliff and Lily to me... People don't stop and think about how pretty it is as a nature name. They just recognize it for the oodle of eldery touting it today. I think it works and would consider it myself had I no better options.
