[Opinions] Althea
What do you think of the name Althea? I recently rediscovered it and can't get it off my mind. I think it may have become my number one girl's name. I have narrowed my list down to three combos: Althea Joy, Althea Kate, and Althea Lily. I'd like your opinion on them.Althea Joy received zero love on the polls but it's my favorite at the moment. To me it seems sweet and light. I don't mind that Joy is a bit of a filler, I like the name as it is.Althea Kate honors my mother. I love the idea of the name but I'm not in love with it. I'm torn, I suppose.Althea Lily is the other favorite. I have adored Lily since I picked up my first baby name book and it's never not been on my list. She tends to get slotted in the middle because of her popularity and I'm okay with that. Thanks!http://www.babynames.com/namelist/9852886

Very pretty. Althea Joy is so sweet, and Althea Lily sounds delicate and beautiful. This name has been growing on me lately; I'm glad that you brought it up. :-)

Anytime!I'm glad to see Althea's so well liked.

I think Althea Joy's wonderful and I don't consider Joy a filler at all. I actually think in the US Joy is less popular as a middle name than Kate and Lily. Honoring your mother would be nice, but I'd go with the name you love and using a virtue name will never get flack for not honoring in the middle name slot the same way a non-virtue name might.

I don't really mind how popular a middle name is. Sure, it's nice for it to be unique but in the long run the love of a name is what matters to me.You can't really argue about a virtue name! Thanks!

Althea puts me to mind of a heavyset, middle-aged woman, which sounds awful but isn't really, I guess because I think of a very bubbly, friendly, heavyset, middle-aged woman.Althea Joy is definitely the best of your combos. I don't see Joy as being fillerish at all; that honor is reserved for Rose, Grace, and Elizabeth. I'm not wild about Althea Kate, maybe just because Kate is so overused as a fn these days. Althea Lily is rather awkward. Therre are too many Ls, I suppose.

That's not too awful of an image. Sure, she's middle-aged and overweight but she's also bubbly and friendly! Thanks!

I quite like Althea. I also like Anthea and Amalthea, which are similar.Althea Joy is a fun, happy combo. I love it.

I'd never heard of Amalthea before. Thanks!

I like it but I like Alethea so much more that it does seem a pale reflection.

I like Alethea as well. I just prefer it as a middle name, particularly to Rose. I'd never use it as a first name because a lot of people tend to pronounce it ə-LEE-thee-ə which I despise. I prefer al-ə-THEE-ə.Thanks!

Alethea is melodious, but it seems like Elysia with a speech impediment. This makes me prefer Althea. But Anthea is my true preference.

It's lovely. LOVE Althea. But those middle names don't work. I recommend a two-syllable middle name that is longer than six letters. You could also use a three syllable middle name with a tonic syllable that is not the second syllable. It balances without overpowering.Althea Margaret
Althea Frances
Althea Catherine
Althea Winifred
Althea Caroline
Althea Josephine

I like your suggestions. Althea Winifred and Althea Josephine stand out. Thanks!

I adore Althea! It's sprightly but also staid in a certain light.Althea Joy is definitely my favorite of the combinations you've provided.

I like that description of Althea. And I wholly agree with it.Thanks!

I love this name, while DH is unimpressed.I think Althea Joy and Althea Lily are disarmingly wonderful combos. The first makes me happy, an the second is grand.

That's really unfortunate about your DH, Althea is a lovely name. Part of Althea Joy's appeal is it just makes me happy. Thank you!

My favorite is Althea Lily.

Love Althea!
From your list Althea Joy is hands down my fav. It's bright and sweet with just the right amount of spunk.

I like how you describe Althea Joy. It's exactly how I see the name: bright, sweet, and a little spunky. Thanks!

Althea is lovely and fresh. Of your combos, I like Althea Joy best. For me, it isn't filler. It was what I was feeling after my first child was born -- pure joy. Unfortunately, dh didn't agree with me and our prior agreement was that he'd choose the mn so he did.The other combos are nice as well although I'm not really into nns (Kate) on the bc. Family names are nice but only if the parents actually want to use them, imo. I don't believe someone should feel pressured (self-imposed or otherwise) to use them.I'd say Althea Lily is my second favorite here. It reminds me of moonlight shining on the lake. Eh, sorry that's the best I can do in the AM. It does conjure up images of moonlight and water and I do love water lilies so there you go. :-)

I'm not expecting but similar to what you said I don't see Joy as a filler. I see it as representing joy in life. It's a name that makes me smile.I like your image of Althea Lily. It's sweet and verging on romantic. Thanks!

Althea is very pretty :)Althea Joy gets my vote. It's so sweet, and I like the way the strong J sound in Joy balances out the soft sounds in Althea. Love this combo.Althea Kate is nice, if boring, but it's honouring so it gets a pass. Kate is more filler to me than Joy. It flows well.Althea Lily is my least favoruite, too many soft sounds for me, but it sounds fine too.So really, any of them work, but Althea Joy is definitely my favourite!

I feel the same way about Kate, that it's a bit boring. You're right about Althea Lily being too soft as well. Thanks!

How about Althea Carys? Similar to Kate but more unusual, and with a lovely meaning as a bonus.
vote up1
Althea Carys is nice and I love the meaning together ("healing love"). I'm just not a huge fan of the name's sound. Thanks!
vote up1
Fair enough :) You've already got a winner with Althea Joy anyway.

I prefer Anthea to Althea because I think 'healthier' with a dropped H. Having said that, I can see why you love it and I agree that Althea Joy is very appealing. Althea Kate is nice too, but I'm not keen on Althea Lily. Lily just doesn't appeal to me.
vote up1
I like Anthea also but it doesn't appeal to me as well as Althea. Thanks!

I love Althea. You could use the nickname Thea, or no nickname at all. It's a great name.
I'm not a fan of your middle names though. They all seem like filler names to me. I like the idea of honoring your mother. How about:Althea Kitty
Althea Kari
Althea Kaja
Althea Cadi
Althea Katinka
Althea KarinOr away from the Kate theme:Althea Lilias
Althea Marnie
Althea Rosie
Althea Maddie

I wasn't really looking for suggestions but I like them so thanks!Althea Kitty is sort of right up my alley. I also like Althea Rosie. Really cute names.

How is Althea pronounced? If it's like healthier minus the h then I personally don't like the sound of it.
I like Althea Kate the best, especially since it's after you mum :)
vote up1
I hadn't ever thought of it that way but I guess in certain areas Althea does sound like healthier. Thank you for pointing that out.

Especially in certain British accents, I think it would sound like that, but in my accent, it sounds like all-thee-uh, which I like.
