I LOVE Gem, just Gem. I feel like it's too, I dunno, commercial, or self conscious, or something, on it's own. So Im constantly trying to come up with ways to use it as a NN. My favorite currently is Jane- Emily "Jem," but I still like Gem better. It's glamourous but earthy and to-the-point.
I think if I were to witness it in real life (on a person, because I've seen it on 2 dogs) I'd be more inclined to take it more seriously. I feel like my last inquisitions of this name my have tainted my view to the negative side. No one ever seemed to love it as much as I did :(
