I love the name for either gender.Aeon: I know I came here to kill you...

It's a little surname-y for me, but it could work as a mn, esp. if it's a family name. If used for a fn, though, Sully would be a great nn. :b BTW, I know a little girl named Sullivan who has a sister named Sutton. But I don't think that means it (either of them, really) is picking up in popularity as a unisex name. lolETA: Van would make a good nn, too.

Its a surname to me...and I dislike all surnames (with the exection of the forever popular ones such as Taylor. Also, Emerson which I have always adored for a girl but would never use it).Other than that, its not horrible...better than a lot of other names I seriously dislike.~~Kris~~

I'm neutral myself on this name; but I do find it very interesting that Sullivan has been fairly well-used as a boys' given name in northern France recently.

It's a very handsome, masculine fn. Sully and Van are both very nice nns. There's a good handful of ln as fn that I like/don't mind and this makes it in, mostly b/c I've never known anyone with this ln. That's prolly not a good reason, but the ln Kennedy and the like are the ones that I don't really like... depending on heritage."We can even learn from our enemies." -Ovid

It's good. It's not one I would use, but it's nice on someone else's kid. It's much more distinguished than a lot of surname names like Tanner and Cooper. The nn Sully would annoy me, so I would only call him Sul or Vinnie.

I can't handle Sullivan, because every time I hear it, I think of the song by Caroline's Spine. It's called "Sullivan" and I find it difficult to listen to--it's one of those songs where if I was the sort of person who cried at things, I'd be weeping. I'd have a hard time calling a kid by his full name if it was Sullivan. These're the lyrics, if you're curious:It's not hard to reach back
To that day, underneath the Iowa sun
Running to the tower of Waterloo
looking for the Sullivan's train to come
And his five boys would run to the top
And salute him as he went by
First we wave hello, then we waved goodbye
GoodbyeIt's not hard to reach back
to the days after the attack on Pearl
And overnight my buddies turned into men
Running out of time for games and girls
And the Sullivan boys were not overlooked
Uncle Sam calling each by name
The very next day they left on a mystery trainSo say goodbye, bye, bye Mrs. Sullivan
And don't you cry, cry, cry, cry, cry...
We regret to inform you that the Navy
is taking your sons away
All five, five, five, five
So put your blue star in the window
In the windowIt's not hard to reach back to her smile
when she received a letter
and the letters they sounded generally the same
said if they couldn't be home
at least they were together
on a mighty fighting battleship
somewhere in the South Pacific
the letters never got much more specific So say goodbye, bye, bye Mrs. Sullivan
And don't you cry, cry, cry, cry, cry...
We regret to inform you that the Navy
is keeping your sons away
All five, five, five, five
So put your blue star in the window
In the windowIt's not hard to reach back to the day
when the war finally came home
Uncle Sam'll send you a telegram

That looks like it was based on a true story from World War II, and was made into a movie called "The Fighting Sullivans". The five Sullivan brothers joined the Navy after Pearl Harbor and insisted on being kept together. In their neighborhood growing up they were known as "The fighting Sullivans". They were all killed on the same day, and since then I believe it became law that brothers can't serve together. There was also a ship the USS Sullivan in their honor. Their mother broke the champagne bottle on it to christen it.The old black and white movie from about 43 or 44 was a real tear jerker. I dare any one to watch it and not bawl your eyes out at the end.

His buddies will always call him Sully. I knew a couple of boys in school with this last name and they were always called Sully.

I really like Sullivan. It's very modern, yet down to earth, and the nickname Sully or Van is great.

It's one of the few surname-first names that I actually like. I find it masculine, and it's especially great if it's a name in your family tree. However, I don't like the nn Sully. Van might be better.

I'm so tired of the surname as fn trend. Well, that's not true. I never really liked it in the first place. If a surname is from your own family tree and you want to pass down the heritage, then that is a beautiful tradition. I can certainly understand. It's a shame that recent fad for borrowing other people's heritage has watered down the proactice. I don't understand why people opening up a telephone book and pick out a name randomly. Where's the meaning in that? Yes, I know the sounds might be pleasing to their ears. But that isn't enough for me when it comes to surnames.Sorry for the rant. This is a big pet peeve of mine.I will say that if you do use it, for any reason you choose, I do find the nn Sully very cute.

It sort of reminds me of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. I like it though. The nn Sully is adoreable. :-)Arcadia
