[Opinions] French name combo?
I like Melisande, but I also like Melisandre. I used it in a game the other day, but Melisandre isn't in the name banks. I thought it was another made-up name, but Alexie says it's a French name. So is it a combo name? If so, it is a combo of which names? Melissa and Alexandre / Andre?
How would you pronounce it?
Do you like or dislike Melisandre? Also has anyone ever seen/heard the name Ysandre (besides in the Jacqueline Carey books)?_________________________________________________
John: Why do you know all this random, useless stuff?
Me: One day I will win a lot of money on Jeopardy.

I found one reference on the Web to an ancient Greek author supposedly named Melisander:http://www.ancientlibrary.com/smith-bio/2130.htmlI think you should post a query about this on the Name Facts board to see if any of the experts on Greek names who post there can confirm that this man existed and if his Greek name really would be rendered as "Melisander" in English, and what it would mean in ancient Greek. It seems to me from the cursory bit of research I have just done that the original French form of the ancient Germanic name with became Millicent in English was Melisende, and that name may have become confused with names like Alexander and Cassandra which resulted in Melisande and Melisandre becoming popular forms of the name during medieval times.

I don't know the origin of Melisandre, but at any rate, I don't like it. It's excessive ... to many sounds and letters. I do like Melisande, and in the same vein, Millicent and Melicent. _____________________________________________________________________Elinor

Melisandre / YsandreI much prefer Melisande without the "r," though I suppose it would be a combo of Melisande and Andre. I am absolutely CRAZY about Ysandre, AND Jacqueline Carey! But I haven't heard of anyone with this name. Of course, I'm in Texas, surrounded by Bubbas, Macks, Jolenes and, damn them, Tiffanys.

I'm so glad to find another Carey fan! :o) Do you think Ysandre would be an awful real person's name? I think I'm just hooked on the "-sandre" ending lately.
Oh, and the new set about Imriel de la Courcel comes out soon!

Ysandre would be a terrific real person's namealthough that person might need to live in France or Quebec or somewhere French is spoken regularly. I don't picture any moms in Houston choosing it (where I am).
And I'm stoked about the new set!

Oh, my goodness. I can't read French :o) What is "grec"? I believed you about it being a real name. I'm just big on meanings and wondered if I could break it down and find a meaning for it since it isn't in the banks. Thanks!
