Message: "Brook" - Behind the Name

I used to see this, and Brooklyn especially, as the height of tacky. But recently, I read a book (about cats, I'm so immature) where all the characters had nature based names. One was "Brook Where Small Fish Swim", "Brook" for short. I started really falling in love with it, the association now being with nature rather than surnames and unisex. I don't like the way it looks, or sounds, especially, when I think about it, but for some reason it's stuck in my head.

Then I found out that my friend Alexia's middle name is Brooklyn, and I've started really liking it in the mn spot. I'm not that keen on Brooklyn or Brooke, but I love Brook right now. Amaya Brook is my top combo right now.

What do you think? Is it tacky? Combo ideas (especially with Brook as the middle)?

I know an extremely adorable little girl named Brooklyn. Her brother's name is Memphis. They're two of the sweetest, smartest little kids I've met in a long time. Brooklyn is actually the only reason I've recently been reconsidering my opinion on the name Brook. I used to hate it because I was bullied by a Brooke for a few years in Girl Scouts. She got away with some really bad behavior because her mother was the scout leader.

I kind of like Brook as a boys name though. It seems a little bohemian and free-spirited. It's a name you can have a lot of fun with. In that context, the masculine names I can think of would be:
Atticus Brook
Arden Brook
August Brook
Cassius Brook
Finley Brook
Hawthorne Brook
Maxence Brook (I just heard of Maxence today, and I've been tossing it around in my mind a bit)
Micah Brook
Ridley Brook
Torrance Brook
Victor Brook

For a girl, I think your Amaya Brook is really pretty. If I were to use Brook for a girl mn, it would be themed names like
Summer Brook
Autumn Brook
Solene Brook
Aya Brook

I actually really like Summer Brook... but it would probably seem uber tacky. I love Marina, Cecilia, and Tatiana especially out of your suggestions. Brook Titania is nice, too.
Maxence Brook is strangely appealing, ditto Finley and Atticus. I hadn't really considered it for a boy.

Where I live, it sounds like the Afrikaans word 'broek', which unfortunately means both 'trousers' and 'knickers'. The first time I saw a reference to Brooke Shields, I very nearly flipped.

Of course, that doesn't apply to most of the world. When it comes to, let's say, modern names, I think it's often wise to use a total classic with them, just in case the tide of history changes and leaves them stranded, as if their owners had a date of birth tattooed on their chin. Or a slightly off-centre classic!

I grew up with a girl named Brook and after over a decade of knowing her, I still could not get used to the way her name felt when I said it. I try not to be so blunt/negative, but, honestly, it sounds like the sound my cat makes when she throws up. Sorry. And Amaya has such a lovely flowing sound to it, it seems a shame to cut it off with Brook.

I know what you mean. I only really like it because of the character, and the imagery. I felt Amaya kind of balanced it out, for me?
As for cat sick... My cat has never vomited, to my knowledge, so I wouldn't know. :) Her name is Skye, incidentally. I like Skye.

I like the sound and imagery of Brook, but only with this spelling. Brooke and Brooklyn are still on the edge of tacky for me.

While combos like Amaya Brook or Imani Brook are sweet sounding, I would prefer Brook with a longer, more quirky first name.

Thanks! Yes, I do feel a little uncomfortable with liking Brook for this reason, and I don't like Brooke or Brooklyn. And thankyou for the combos- I especially like Ulyssa and Isadora. Serafina is nice, too.

I want to like the naturey image but I just can't get on board. It's not at all attractive sounding to me. I do think it works much nicer on boys though.

I like it ok in the middle, it maintains a bit of poeticness there. Amaya Brook is nice- Brook brings a bit of ugly to overly fluffy Amaya.

Thanks! I can't like it on boys, it justs seems too feminine. I know what you mean about the sound- I really don't understand my sudden attraction to it. Thanks for the names! I love them all, the exceptions being Henrietta and Jordana. I'm not keen on feminisations, generally.
