While I'm a big fan of myths and generally liking the sound of the name, I really just don't like the name for anyone else but the planet or the Roman goddess because it's just one of those names that will *always* for the entire future of mankind be associated with Venus of the myths. No-one else (no, not even Venus Williams) can "own" that name.

I think it's a gorgeous name. But not one I would ever name a child. I think it's the kind of name you choose for yourself when you're older. I feel the same way about Maxime(the female version, I think they spell the same way in French, but I don't remember) or Maxie. There's just something about it not a lot of people can fulfill, or something. I'm not making sense...
Anyway, Venus is a very beautiful name in my opinion. Any woman who truly 'fits it' should be very proud :)

I wouldn't make a good Venus...but if she does, that's great. I think that Venus would be a hard name to pull off.

All are very strong associations, and make the name seem less usable to me.

It's great in theory, but a lot to live up to. Cute on any child, but a grown woman named Venus would have to be striking, confident and oozing sex appeal. If she were shy, plain and awkward, the name would swamp her and only draw attention to her lack of flair. I'm glad it suits this woman you know, though ... That is cool :-)
