Message: "Calumbine" - Behind the Name

I just got a wedding invitation in the mail and it says the bride's name is Sarah Calumbine. Not a typo, at least on my part, and I'd assume not on their wedding invitations either. I actually think Calumbine is pretty, even though it's hard to think it's not an incorrect version of Columbine.

I googled Calumbine and got one hit for an obituary with it used as a first name, it seems to be a rare surname, and also the name of some sort of tincture that can be made from calumba root, which is native to east Africa? Anyone else know of it or have any theories? No idea how it came to be her middle name.

Anyway, what do you think of Sarah Calumbine? Or what about just Sarah Columbine? I think either are lovely.

I think Columbine is too closely linked to the school shooting to be at all usable, the (beautiful) flowers don't even show up as a Google result on the first page.

If Sarah Calumbine is old enough to get married I'm guessing she was named before the above mentioned events happened, still unfortunate.

I'm guessing it's a family surname.

Very much agree. It would never work if you live in the USA. It might work if you live elsewhere though because they've likely never heard of the Columbine shooting.

I think it is probably a variation on Columbine. I like it as a middle name.

It's fine as a FN + LN combination, but it doesn't "fit" in the middle name spot. At least not in my opinion, as I find it too surnamey.
And I don't really like Columbine either. I only associate it with the Columbine shooting - and I'm not even American so..

My first impression was that it could be some kind of feminisation of Calum, but I think you're likely to be closer to the mark with the calumba root. Lots of names comes from nature after all. It's not my usual taste but, oddly, I really like it. I prefer it to Columbine

Yes, being American I like that just changing that o to an a turns it into a similar name/word but disassociates it with Colombine.

I actually just looked up Calum and the meaning and history section states "Scottish form of Columba" so they probably are related after all.

Sarah Calumbine looks misspelled. Sarah Columbine is intriguing. I like Sarah Alice.
