Interesting name;never heard it before. I am curious what your grandmother's ancestry was now. Perhaps that could give some clues as to where the name came from.

It reminds me of the last name Malkin, but with the added letter like in Russian. There's a political commentator named Michelle Malkin who appears on Fox regularly, so that's where my spider web of a mind goes. A female Malkin. I don't like it as a first or middle name.

It's certainly different; I hadn't seen it before. Google's telling me it means, "an evil looking female cat," and that it's derived from the world "grimalkin," which is apparently an archaic term for a cat and also used to mean "a spiteful old woman." But the term "grimalkin" itself derives from "grey" + "malkin." "Malkin" itself is (according to Wikipedia) derived from the name Maud (meaning "powerful battler," being a form of Matilda). So Malkina sounds like it actually should mean "warrior" or something to that effect, which isn't nearly so bad as that evil cat thing.

I don't think it would be too bad of a name, though apparently it's strongly associated with a character played by Cameron Diaz in a movie I've never seen ('The Counselor'). In the movie, Malkina is "a pathological liar and a sociopath" as well as a former exotic dancer. Not the nicest associations, I suppose.
