I know an Ivory. I think her full name is Ivory Tuesday or Ivory Wednesday? I can't remember which. I like it, people call her "Ives" for short which I think is really cute.Ivory has a delicate, fairytale imagery to me - a name that is pretty but impractical, like the names from folk stories are: Goldilocks and Briar Rose and Rapunzel and what have you. Of course it also makes me think of towers :) I like it as a name, and I loved meeting a real-life Ivory. I didn't think of elephants, soap or pianos at all when I did.Ivory Amalthea

Honestly I don't like it at it. I think it is slightly better on a boy, but I still don't like it then.

I think it's a beautiful name - a very namey word. I wish it were just a name. It's like Amber - both a color word and a "gemmy" type word. I'm not bothered about elephant tusks... I mean, I would never think of that if I met an Ivory. I think the worst thing about it is the concern that someone would take it to be evocative of race, like Ebony (regardless of the bearer's own appearance). The second worst thing is the association with soap, which isn't that bad.So I think it's very nice to see on someone, but is hard enough to use that I think it will stay rare.Ivory Cristina
Ivory Nephele (see what I did there)
Ivory Parisa

I love Ivory. It was quite high on my list at one time. I don't think I could use it though. It almost feels wrong. I love the sound but besides it being faintly tied to being white/Caucasian it feels too sacred as an actual thing. My mind just goes straight to poachingIvory Selinia

It's one of the very few names I just can't take seriously. It's odd, because there are way more obscure word names that I would happily use, but I can't get on board with Ivory.

One of the less attractive gem names, I think. Calls to mind soap and elephant tusks. If I was Ivory I wouldn't like to hear about ivory bans and the illegal ivory trae. The one Ivory I ever knew was a guy, a black guy, and so Ivory on him seemed as silly as Ebony on a white girl.

It seems weird to me to say that it's silly to name a black girl Ivory or a white girl Ebony. Sienna is sort of popular with white people and no one says, "how silly! her skin's not orange/red/brown enough for that name"...same goes for other popular color names like Violet or Gray. That said, it does make me think of soap.
