Wdyt of Onie, "OH-nee" ?Would you say it leans male or female? What full name would you use it as a nickname for?

I hate it, sorry. It sounds like "own" and rhymes with phony. I'd probably assume it was short for Oneida, so it also makes me think of utensils.

Aren't oni like demonic creatures in Japanese folklore? That what I think of. It's hard for me to imagine it as a name.I think it could work equally well for either; it doesn't have a particular lean for me.Maybe Onisim, Algernon, or Leonid / Leonidas & Antonia, Ondina, or Honora?

I don't know that it leans at all. I could as easily see it on one as the other. For a girl:
Antonia
Apollonia
Alona
Antonella
Bellona
Bryony / Briony
Corona
Fiona
Joan
Leona
Petrona
Pomona
Simone
WinonaFor a boy:
Adonai
Antonio
Conan
Donatus
Jonah
Jonas
Kapono
Konani
Lonan
Malone !!
Monroe
Tyrone

Short for Onesimus, or indeed Onesima. Oh say, can you hear the voice of Roy Orbison singing with a mild attack of sinusitis: Onee the lonee

I think of Oney Judge, so I say girl. I think it's cool. Nickname for Winona perhaps?

Like it.
Would assume it was a girl. If it were a nickname, I would guess something like Honora or Onora... possibly something like Antonella.

I think Onie could make a cute nickname. It sounds feminine to me. Also, it may be because of the similarity to yoni.Ondine
Iona

Oneida
Onora
Ona
Sidonie
Bellona
Fiona
Winona
Leonie

Can't believe I didn't think of Sidonie and Leonie. I could totally see that.
