[Opinions] Nancy
I know it's dated, but I really like Nancy. I would never use it IRL since I like a lot of other names a whole lot more, but Nancy is so...sunny and happy to me. Not in annoying way, in a gentle, appealing way. It's okay if you hate it, though, just tell me what you think. :)* The Poster Formerly Known As Billina *

I LIKE NANCY. I hope it comes back. It was the name of a character of a little thingy I wrote once. She was a teenager. It was so cute.

Yes - it is a great name, but the horrid slurs bother me, which I even remember from Everybody Loves Raymond; I know that Everybody Loves Raymond is just a fictional TV show with character-actors, but... Enough Said.I think this beautiful name might eventually make a comeback--and I hope that it does.

It was one of my two favorite names when I was 10-12 years old. The other was Ellen. I'm not enthralled with either now. Nancy seems namby-pamby to me now and Ellen is just blah. Nancy Reagan doesn't help since I always found her starry-eyed adoration of Ronnie annoying. Also my brother's first wife was named Nancy. She was adopted from a Korean orphanage at the age of 12 and Nancy was the name the adopters gave her. She treated my brother badly after their divorce, basically stealing his son away from him. That doesn't help either.

I totally agree! It's never been used here to my knowledge so I don't think of it as dated - that might help. (I knew an Englishwoman whose birth name was Nancy, but she far preferred Nan. If she's even still alive, she'll be pretty old.) But I can readily imagine a small Nancy in a gingham dress, frisking on a sunlit lawn before trotting off to her dollies' tea party. She could have a sister named Betsy! Pity Lindsey's been done to death, but in the event of a third sister, there's always Topsy.

It's my mother's name. Didn't flow well at all with her maiden name (two syllables and ending in the -ee sound.) I know of a couple of Asian girls in their early 20s with this name, but not any other Nancys that aren't a few years older than my mom. I find it kinda cute.

Love the name Nancy! We had an "adopted grandma" named Nancy Kate and that's why I am Sarah Kate.

I was wondering who this Princess Kenny was.:)It's not a name I'd pick either, but I like it and it seems happy and sunny to me too. The three Nancys I know of are all young - 19, 14 and 5-ish - and I've never met an elderly one, so it's also got a lively youthful feel to it, for me anyway. I also like Nan, but I'm probably in a small minority there.

It's dated but not in a good way. Bad-perm, 1980's shoulder pads, clandestine smoker, Republican Ladies' Lunch League, complain to the homeowners' association anytime the Garcias forget to move their dumpsters back into the garage.

It feels sunny and happy to me, too! I really dig the possible Nancy Drew connection you can get from it. It reminds me a little bit of goats (I guess because of nanny goat?), but I don't mind because I like goats. I like its dated charm. :)(OT, but I didn't know you changed your posting name! Obviously I've been away for too long. :P )

Not a fan. Not only is it emphatically dated and easily pictures to mind, an older woman but it is used as an derotergory term from time to time. "Nancy boy" and all.Oddly enough, my grandmother when she was alive would constantly call my oldest sister this even though her name was nothing near it. Her name is Kristina. I don't know how she got 'Nancy' from that.

I like Nancy. Though I am inclined to pronounce it Nantcy.I would even use it, it works well with my last name. Not that I'm having any more children, that would be a biblical miracle.

I've heard it used too often as a gay slur, plus it rhymes with fancy and prancy, which probably doesn't help.If I disregard that, I can see where you're coming from. It also has a '60s sunshiny vibe to me; I think of Nancy Drew, floral dresses, and big, round sunglasses.
