What are your thoughts on Maybelle? Too pretty? :P

There was a dotty old lady who used to bring her miniature Dachshunds to the vet where I worked. When her dog died she got a puppy, which was extremely spoiled and tiny, and named it Maybelle. She'd say the name so preciously ... like it was two words, a phrase, May Belle. I can't even think the name Maybelle without hearing her say it and thinking of the little dog in a sweater. Awww.
I think it's too saccharine for a person. Belle of May... ew.

Hmm, I wouldn't describe it as pretty as much as I would Southern, down home and uber feminine. It also makes me think of makeup (Maybelline).

Pretty? Maybelle? Er ... my objection to it is on the grounds of unnecessary ugliness. The only way to make it worse would be changing the y to an e and achieving Maebelle. And then there's the eye makeup - OK, Maybelline is worse. But Mabel is just lovely, certainly pretty but elegant and restrained too.
My beloved copy of The I Hate To Cookbook is falling apart but still contains the chapter on the lunches where every guest brings something. Its subtitle is Have You Tried Maybelle's Peanut-Butter Aspic? Which pretty well says it all.

Reminds me of cosmetic brand Maybelline. Much too twee for my taste. I don't care for Mabel either.

I used to ~adore~ this name with every fiber of my being. I had it on my list of misc. combos as a middle name. Nicolasa Maybelle.
These days I'm unsure of it. Like, I still like it, but I worry about it being too frilly for its own good. I usually go back and forth over whether I prefer it or Mabel, and I've decided that I do like Maybelle more than Mabel, but I'd probably be more inclined to actually use Mabel since it's "safer", I suppose.
Maybelle gives me the image of bluebirds and butterflies flying over a field of bluebells and daffodills during an outside wedding. The bride is barefoot and her dress is simple but she has flowers in her hair and she's in love and the sun's shining so she's happy.
Mabel is a girl in a lime gingham dress and silk stockings. She always has a book in her hand that she stuffs her nose into when the popular kids crowd in. She is quiet and goes by the rules.
Both are charming images in their own right, I just prefer Maybelle in this case. (and I think my brain just decided that little gingham-Mabel somehow grows up to be barefoot-bride-Maybelle. Huh).

It primarily reminds me (at least, right at this moment) of "Everything is Green", a short story by David Foster Wallace...I think it's set in a trailer park and narrated by a guy named Mitch; he seems generally weary/bitter/coarse, but while he's observing a woman called Mayfly, he thinks "she is my morning".
...so, the impression I get from it is very sweet and bright with a cynical twist...it'd be a good name for a slightly tragic fairy girl imo.
I still prefer Mabel, though, because of Maybelline.

Too frilly for me, but I like to bring it up when I talk about Mabel, since some people do really like their extra letters.

I kind of like its Southern charm, but you'd have to be Southern to use it. Or not care if people think you are.
