[Opinions] Isis
Is Isis still an acceptable name for a woman? I have a character (somewhat evil) that I named Isis a while ago and now I'm realizing it might be strange with the whole terrorist group thing. Still usable?
Thoughts?Please vote on my names:)

For now, the terrorist group has definitely ruined it, but only time will tell if it will be ruined in the long run.

"The whole terrorist group thing" lol Yeah... I think Isis as a name is ruined for a looooooooooong time.

I think it is unusable at the moment because of the terrorist organisation. I would definitely avoid it

This is another reason that I despise acronyms - as the acronym currently bears so much, affecting an otherwise beautiful heritage.

I feel like it's a name only a name nerd can love. It's not acceptable by any means. And imagine the jokes this poor kid would have to hear. If you name your kid Isis you're basically setting them up for failure. Why is it so loved on here? I don't get it.

Its name is ruined, both in real life and for a character.

I wouldn't use it for...a while. It's just too associated with the terrorist group for now and the general public doesn't know it was a name with its own history before its infamous use. Sad because this was one of my favorites. There's even a group of women named Isis who petitioned to get the media to stop referring to the group as ISIS and call them ISIL instead. I feel for them...that's pretty unfortunate.

What about another form Eset or Iset? It will be good for you? I have an idea. What about name:Isidora, Isidore or Isadora - meaning "Gift of Isis"

I think Isis should probably stay off the table even for characters. The association is too strong, too current, and too terrible to really be overlooked right now. Shame since it's such a nice name.

Ha, there was a girl at my old school called Isis! She is 16 or 17, so she was born before the terrorist group became well-known. She gets some ribbing for it now, but she takes it in stride. She has Egyptian heritage, I think. It's a pretty cool name-- if ill-advised.

No, it's not usable anymore. Even for a character. If you used it now, the fact that she is an evil character paired with the name seems way too obvious and over the top.

For a character, I suppose so but they have ruined it for real life use. I think it'll be a very, very long time before you could use it with any ease.

I think it is destroyed for the next 10 years (at least). I have actually always liked the name, but the terrorists just had to call themselves ISIS..
But I live in a country where it is illegal to name your child Adolf after Hitler. So maybe that is just my influence.

Is it illegal to name a Norwegian child Adolf? In Sweden it would probably be seen as controversial, but it wouldn't be illegal. I mean, it's an old royal name after all. (Not that I would use it, it's way too blemished.)

Yes it is. If someone is named Adolf here these days, they are either very old or born outside Norway. I think it is to protect the children against bullying or something.. Or the assossiation to Hitler. I don't like the sound of Adolf either, so its totally ok to me.

For a character, yeah that's fine but do whatever you prefer (change or keep the name) For a human, completely different story. Isis has been decling in popularity and I can see it dropping off of the charts all together soon enough which not only surprise me but doesn't dissapoint me considering that I've never viewed "Isis" as much of a decent name. To me it just works better in either a fictional world (story) or a name used in ancient times.

I know two women named Isis,'I think it works because they're older, not sure how it would be received

I think that, for the timebeing, I would shelf Isis. Especially for a villain, it seems redundant and uninspired even if you named her before the organization was ever heard of. I hope someday soon we can hear and see this name without thinking of such an evil group.Personally, the first thing that comes to mind when I hear Isis is the dog from Downton Abbey, but it's directly undermined by the second-- the terrorist group.
