[Opinions] Smith
I just met a little boy about 3 years old named Smith. At first I thought it was the family's last name his dad was calling him that jokingly, but that wasn't their last name.Wdyt? I think it's weird.

In one of Leslie Dunkling's books he reports that there were a few 19th-century cases of Smith being given as a fn to boys whose ln was ... Smith. He could only imagine, he said, that the parents reasoned that a common ln like Smith demanded an uncommon fn, like Smith!I'd be very surprised to meet a Smith, and especially a Smith Smith, but it's fashionable to use lns as fns, and occupation names are also trending, so it ticks two boxes right away. Let's hope it's a family ln!

It just sounds too weird as a first name. Maybe it's because it is such a common surname.

I never understood why anyone would think this is a good name. It's like calling your kid "random surname"

I'm not very fond of surnames as first names (especially not for girls) and Smith isn't very appealing. Mostly because it's such a common surname, I guess.

I actually don't mind it. It's my mothers maiden name and therefore was my gran 's married name, so those factors appeal to me. I have heard it used as a fn before, so it doesn't seem really odd.

I agree it's a tad odd. I mean, there are surnames that can work as first names (I have many on my list) the likes of Beckett, Clark, Marshall, Jacoby etc.
But then there's Smith... It just doesn't work. I think Jones would be better!

I don't think Smith transitions well into a given name.

It's very SATC, but I'll admit... I like it.

I think it's a bit weird but more awesome and adorable and I just can't stop myself from like surnames as first names. Sigh. I've tried and it's a lost cause. :)
I know a brand new little guy names Brooks. Also awesome.

I don't like it, mainly for the same reason I don't like Archer, Carter, Cooper, or Mason: it's an occupation (also a surname) that you've now named a person. I used to be fond of Hunter, but I don't even like that name anymore... though that's more to do with the sociopath Hunter Moore than the fact that "hunter" is an occupation.
