Help[Opinions] Pepper, Marigold, & Ethelred

Pepper - I once had a dog named Pepper; also, it reminds me of food, grey hair, pepper spray, and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".
Beyond that, I don't much like the sound.
Marigold - I think it might be difficult to pull off...sometimes it seems vibrant and fun to me, other times stodgy and self-indulgent...maybe because of the gold/old ending? (I'm not sure why.) I like that it has the potential of being shortened to Mari.
Ethelred - I really like it, although I can't imagine bestowing it upon a child...it sounds more like something I would name a car (my current one's Ermintrude NN Trudy)...I know it's OTT, but it seems almost familiar to me...possibly because I had a great uncle Eldred, plus I vaguely remember reading about Ethelred the Unready and thinking his name was cool.

Pepper is a cute nickname, but should stay a nickname.
Marigold is kind of nice and has a beautiful meaning, but it sounds like an old lady. Can't imagine it on a child.
Ethelred ...well, at least it's better than Etheldred or Ethelfleda, but no thanks.
EDIT: Gosh, is Ethelred MALE? It's even worse then...

Pepper would make a sweet nickname, maybe Philippa or Philomena or something.
Marigold is one of my favourite names ever, so I absolutely love it. Vintage, energetic, bright, and beautiful.
Ethelred is a hit too much for me. I'm not the biggest fan of Ethel by itself and I don't think it has a particularly pleasant sound.

Pepper is a GP of mine. The orphan girl from the musical Annie endeared me to it. I like it only as a NN though.
There are so many nice Mari- names but -gold is too much.
There are pronunciation issues with Ethelred. I like e-THEL-red, but wouldn't be able to stand anyone saying ETH-el-red.

Pepper sounds like a dog, Marigold like a cow, and Ethelred is too ugly to give even to an animal.
Pepper also sounds like something Patricia or Margaret or somebody would want people to call her when she's a pigtailed tomboy, and when she's grown up and working in an office for some reason she's never switched over to Pat or Margie or anything like that, and so she seems like she's trying too hard to be youthful.
Ethelred died a thousand years ago, and deserved to die and to stay dead.

I've always quite liked Pepper as a nickname, though I would never use it as a given name. It's a little silly in that case.
Marigold is a bit frilly and prim.
Ethelred is a bit . . . not. Ethel is fine (though not a favorite), but it just looks like 2 separate words. I can't think of it as one word. It seems very spiky.

Hilarious! Marigolds do smell rather peppery, and then there's red pepper ... a very harmonious set!

I've heard of someone named Pepper and it really grew on me. Wouldn't use it but, as a nn, maybe. My cousin also has a dog named Pepper -_- but I still like it.
I'm not a fan of Marigold...just gives me an image of an old eccentric lady who wears wildflowers in her hair (why, I don't know). Ethelred sounds cool; sounds like the name of a band.
