I knew a Dinah who was known as Di until, as a teenager, she read Kafka and decided that an initial as a name was the way to go. She became Dee so successfully that her husband never knew its origin until their children were grown up.
So, really, any name starting with D would do. Perhaps it might even work as a nn for Deborah; it's not wonderful but it's a whole lot better than Debby!
