Gladys is kinda cool.
Ethel makes me think of chemistry. Ethyl alcohol in particular (esp. as I associate Ethel with roughly the prohibition era!). It's a throat-clearing sound, and not appealing.
Gladys is glad and Welsh like Glenda.
