Help[Opinions] Occam?
We recently found out we are having a boy and the only name we can agree on is Occam, like Occam's Razor (pronounced AH-kum). Neither of us are in love with it but we can't find anything to "beat" it. Is it horrible? Do you hate it? If it helps, we already have a daughter, Eleanore, and our last name is a single syllable starting with H.

I actually like it. I would however assume that the parents were very nerdy. Maybe you are! Its nerdiness is why it appeals to me.

Maybe not horrible, but I wouldn't like to be named Occam. People will get use to it eventually, but your son will have a lifetime of spelling and explaining.
Do you like Omri at all? (From the Old Testament, and was the name of a king who was said to be "wicked", but that was a long time ago!)
It's also the name of the main character in the young people's book"The Indian in the Cupboard", if you're familiar with it.
As one of the posters said, tells us the names you almost liked, you and your husband, so we can see your taste, and maybe find something you'd like.

Interesting. I don't think it's awful, but as everyone else has said, it's going to get tedious explaining such an unusual choice, and if it's in reference to the philosopher rather than the principle I'd wonder why not William Ockham H_____. It's hard to suggest names without knowing why you chose Occam! but here's some at random from the same period as Wm of O:

Occam really doesn't go well with Eleanore. I'm not lovin' it.
I don't hate it, but if its after a brand of razors thats really odd and not really a cool or fuzzy story to tell your kid when they ask about their name.

Not a brand of razors, "Occam's Razor" is a philosophical principle, it's the idea that if there are multiple solutions to a problem the simplest answer is probably correct.

I don't hate it, but wouldn't use such an "out there" name if I wasn't absolutely in love with it. You're probably going to spend your life (and *his* life) explaining why he was named after Occam's Razor and William of Ockham; it doesn't seem worth it if you're not absolutely convinced.
Moreover, it really doesn't fit your daughter's name, which is classic and relatively popular. If you ever have another child, you might have trouble finding a name that fits both Eleanore and Occam.
What other names have you considered? It might help us give suggestions.

I've never heard it and have no association to this razor, but it truly is an awful choice.
I picture some zitty teenager with a wretched girlfriend or fat older man whose wife hates him (and herself) yelling at him, "ah, cum already you lazy sack of crap."
Part of me feels like you must be joking and that this isn't a real inquiry.

I've never heard of this as a first name. What are some names that each of you liked but the other rejected? I've gotta know what kind of tastes converge on Occam.

Occum is terrible. It is not a name, Ockham was where the person who came up with the theory was from, not his name, which was William.
The only association any one is going to have with the name is Occam's razor and will probably just be confused.
Eleanore is lovely, I'm sure you can find something just as nice for your son.
