I'd get quite a kick from finding out that a Ben or a Bev was really Benevolence. It would also make a terrific secret full name for a baddie.

The -ence ending says female, but Ben says male.

It seems to be a modification of French Word Names, in this context of Bienveillance (goodwill, favor, kindness, obligingness, courtesy and so on)
IMHO-too much of the good, considering "the effort", if you had to sign with this never-ending name.
Nevertheless, I can see make the use of this name spelling in the French way, as well as Lafayette, Chardonnay or D'Artagnan.
And therefore only for girls, for boys too womanly tender look.
Nns would almost certainly Benny, Bennie, Lancy or Vivi.

It's actually kind of cool as a female name, but I'd be afraid she'd be called Bennie. It doesn't work at all as a masculine name, IMO.

It sounds like either a name one or two Puritan people were given circa 1692. Or else a name that a woman might take upon becoming a nun. Sister Mary Benevolence, say.
In any but those circumstances it seems ridiculous.

Definitely! At least when considering fun Puritan combos. I'd think it would be way awesome if I encountered it in use today.

Nah. Too much of a mouthful by far, and he/she would end up being Ben anyway, so what's the point? Even Shakespeare, who could do most things, used the neater and tidier Benvolio instead!

I like it in the way I like a lot of Puritan virtue names - sort of ridiculous, and appealing based on its ridiculousness. I think it could work for either a boy or a girl, but of course for a boy it has the 'Ben' nickname. I also associate it with a nice, light blue color, which makes me like it more.
