Help[Opinions] Niamh when not Irish?
I really like the name Niamh(and the spelling), but as I'm not Irish do you think I could use it? or would it spare a lot of confusion when spelled as Neve?

Niamh is terrific. It's my favorite girl's name and would be my dd's name if I had one.
Go for it! Gorgeous names are intended to be shared and enjoyed by all.
I prefer the Niamh spelling too, but I understand the difficulties involved. Even saying this, I'd still use the authentic spelling. It sets a good example.

Niamh is very pretty, but the big drawback og Irish names is that the spelling and pronounciation is not obvious to everyone. Explaining how to spell your name every time might be a pain in the ×ss. On the other hand, Neve is not as pretty as Niamh.

I don't think it matters what ethnicity you are. I love Niamh (and its spelling) and I'm not Irish either. I plan on using Saoirse Niamh for a future daughter. =) If you're worried about people mispronouncing it, just correct them. I've had people even mispronounce my name (Laura). It's a pretty name, and I'm not a very big fan of the spelling Neve.

Go for it, if you love it use it... If someone mispronounces it, just correct them... it happens everywhere (mispronouncing) even with english names.

no joke, my name is Tabitha (said exactly as it looks - tab-ith-ah) and yet people - fellow born and bred Americans whose first language is English - constantly mispronounce my name! I've gotten tab-ee-tha, tab-ee-tah (some seem to think it's Scandinavian or something, unless they're Latin and then it's understandable as they don't have the "th" sound), tayb-ith-ah, tayb-ee-tha, etc... my least favorite mispronunciation is a subtle one however that really used to piss me off as a kid - tab-ah-tha! NO! I don't have an 'a' in my name!
So, yeah, it doesn't matter. I say go with Niamh because no matter what, people will say it wrong, even if it's spelled Neve.

Yeah, I find that nobody seems to ever want to say my whole name anyway, lol. In the two places I've worked, I needed a name-tag both times and I had my full name on there but everybody called me Tabby or Tab or, more commonly, Tabs (I'm unaware of when I became a plural...). I think it's supposed to be like Babs or something. Anyhoo, even teachers have rarely ever called me Tabitha. It's a strange phenomenon, though I hate it when strangers do it (which is more common down here in Miami than it was in Chicago).
God I could go on about this! lol but I'll stop now :)
But I must add - I can't stand any other spelling of Tabitha! Especially Tabytha (I've actually met a few of those - all under the age of 10 of course...). It's just... grrr... but, yeah, anyhoo, moving on, people are surprisingly stupid a lot of the time. I don't understand it but I seriously hope that my experiences have been the result of brain farts on the others' sides.

If I saw Neve, I would pronunce it NEHV, like Neve Campbell. So I'd advise against that. If you love Niamh but are afraid people won't "get" it (understandable, if you're in the USA), use it as a middle name and spell it Niamh.
