Veruca as a name is probably inspired by the character from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I wouldn't exactly consider her namesake material since she's a spoiled brat.
I'm guessing Felie knows, since it's the Italian word too.

I just assumed it was a Britishism because the only place I've ever read/heard it used was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and a few other British books.
