Hmmm it doesn't appeal to me because it is also an English word. It means baby deer. I love baby deer :P If it were just its meaning it would be fine, but it is an actual word. So it always makes me think of something small that needs to be protected and I would feel a bit hmmm weird if I had the name as an adult, especially as a self confident 25, 30 or 50 year old.
Three adjectives: helpless, small, young
These are my impressions of it. The sound isn't horrible but it just doesn't work for me. I also dislike Fern. The only one that I like that sounds a bit similar is Fay.
I don't think it was ever popular. It entered the top 1000 a few times but never so high up that anyone could say it was popular.
