[Opinions] Mordecai
This name has been popping up in my life recently. I've been reading Miriam a lot of books by Mordecai Gerstein, a really cool children's author. I also picked up a book with Mordecai in the title. I'm starting to like it, although I wouldn't use it. What do you guys think of it? Does the "mor" part put you off? Do you think it will become popular / trendy? I've got trendy taste and when I start liking a name it tends to mean it's on the rise. Mordecai seems to check all the boxes - biblical, off-beat, old-fashioned, trendy sound. It screams hipster but I've never really heard it. Thoughts overall?

Makes me think of Mordecai from Regular Show.

I LOVE Mordecai! I have been falling in love with it more and more over the last couple of years. I don't know what started it but I am happy it did. I would totally use it on a child and I really think it's not going to get overly popular due to the reasons that Eden gave. A lot of people feel that it is a "dark" name but I love it.

All I think of is that it's the name of one of the children of the corn. No thank you!I mean really, it sounds evil. Malachi is slightly better but still feels evil to me. Malachy feels like the nicest.Eta: apparently the children of the corn name is Malachi but I stand by what I said. They all sound evil. :D culty, scary names.

Oh, I love it! I doubt it will ever become popular/trendy -- it's too cumbersome (one of my favorite qualities in a name).

Some part of me likes it especially since Kai is a possible nn. Another part of me feels that it seems very heavy. It definitely has a lot of personality which isn't a bad thing.I feel that Mordecai seems more youthful than Jedidiah or Obadiah and most -iah names.I also kind of like Malachi which is similar.I would never personally use Mordecai or Malachi purely because a lot of biblical names just feel too Christian to me which makes me feel uncomfortable but I know that most American's are Christians or were raised by Christian parents so they feel more comfortable with biblical names. The only biblical names I'd feel comfortable using are common ones like Gabriel. You seem to mostly want Biblical names so I feel that it is a good choice for you. If you and your husband both love Mordecai you should use it someday.

I love it. I like the "mor-" part, it's like a heavy stone dropped down a deep well. The name's got serious weight and presence but it's also quirky and kinda zany - like a wacky old uncle. It's a bit gothy and melancholy so I don't know if the hipsters will glom onto it. Malachy or Malachi seems more their thing.

I halfway don't like it and halfway do. It does make me think of a somber dour-faced mortician dressed in black, I guess because of the "mord" part. It's reminiscent of "mortician" and "morbid". On the other hand, I think it's kind of cool. I don't think "hipster", I think "eighteenth and nineteenth century". I think about how Abraham Lincoln had an uncle named Mordecai. Apparently he was a wit and raconteur. When his father Abraham Lincoln, the famous Lincoln's grandfather, was killed by a Native American, it was Mordecai who ran back to the cabin, grabbed a gun, and killed the Native American. So the name is like, eighteenth-century bad-ass to me.

Between the Mor (mortuary, mortician, mortify, etc) and the similarity to Malachi (children of the corn), it just gives me a macabre feeling. I don't really like it for that reason.

Which, btw,is why I prefer Malachy over Malachi.

I dislike the mord- part as 'mord' is the swedish word for 'murder'. And I prefer Kai over Cai. But I do like the name, but I could never use it. I prefer Malachi or Malakai.

I love Malachi, too.

It's one of my favorites. My husband does not like it, he says it sounds like something from a fantasy book. Except he loves fantasy books and I don't so I'm totally baffled. I think the Mord- might scare some people off of it, possibly keeping it from getting too trendy? There was a Johnny Depp movie Mortdecai a few years ago, and on Cartoon Network, "Regular Show" features main characters named Mordecai and Rigby. So it's coming to the public eye, to an extent. Mordechai seems to be getting more usage (with the gutteral ch/silent c). I assume that's primarily Jewish parents. But that one is a lot more likely to make the top 1000 than Mordecai. (Mordecai has about ~50-55 boys born per year, Mordechai gets like ~150-200)
