I like it. It's familiar and friendly but not super-common, & it suits anyone of any background, although it's probably most popular in Scotland. It doesn't feel dated because you can find it on all ages, and it shortens quite neatly to Al or Ali if you want it to.
The Alistair I know best is 20 - his sister is Louise.
