I've been watching a youtube channel and there's an ultra adorable little boy named Ernie.
I've never really liked it but now it's really growing on me.
1) Do you like Ernie

3) What would you think if you met a little Ernest "Ernie"

1. The first thing I thought of was Ernie from Sesame Street. But once I get past that, I think it would be adorable on a little boy. Not sure how it would age though.
2. Ernest has a certain charm to it. I imagine one to be serious, kind, steady, and intelligent but slightly naive.

My FIL got Ernest as his fn, after a good friend of his father's, but nobody ever used it. DH got it as his fn, but he's never used it either. It could suit him though: he's an earnest kind of person.
My issue is the Er- sound. I don't' like it in Bert, Gertrude, Mervyn, Percy etc and I don't think it's an accident that they're all pretty well unused now after having been popularish at much the same time. Fashionable sounds; perhaps the -aden names of their day?

2. No. It's even worse than Ernie. At least Ernie has a spark of fun to it.

In the US, Ernie is very strongly associated with the Sesame Street Muppet named Ernie, the sidekick to Bert. Also Ernie Keebler, the mascot for Keebler cookies. (I have a cookie jar shaped like him, or I did; I'm not sure where it is now.)

I don't like Ernest that much, but I do like its homophony with Earnest. The thing that would put me off using it EVER is Ernie which I find awful. Ugly, old mannish and forever linked to the most irritating television character ever...

Ernie brings to mind Bert & Ernie, & Bert names are on the rise, so why not? It fits the trend, along with Wilfred and such. And there are a lot of famous namesake Ernests.
I don't know, it seems like a decent name, with dignity and history, but 'earnest' conjures up someone intense and rather boring. I think it could grow on me but I don't immediately love it.
