Instantly thought of Mortimer Mouse, the name Walt originally wanted to use but people found it to unappealing then & I don't think much has changed.

I have to agree with some of the other posters. I means death. I guess, for a super villain in a novel or film, it would be okay. But, I'm sorry, I don't like it. I also reminds me of an really old person. Too old-fashioned for me.

As a computer geek and a SIMS freak, the name Mortimer reminds me of "Mortimer Goth", the father of the pre-made SIMS family that has a graveyard in their backyard and are generally very creepy.

Haha, that's what I think of too.

Love it! I'm considering using it.

I would just be tickled pink to see this on a real child. I think it's awesome; incredibly nerdy, but awesome. Morty is just quirky and interesting, too. I'd like to see it as a nickname for Mortimer or Morton.

I love the meaning of the name, but even that's not enough to save it for me. The sound of the name makes me think of stagnant, unclean water when I hear it--water full of algae and rotting carcasses. Not exactly the tranquil pond I'd like to see when I hear a name meaning "still water."Array

Mort to me is just dead. You can call it "still" if you want, but that doesn't mask the root for me! I don't like it. Sorry.

Surnamey and reminds me of death. Nice.

Great character name but I wouldn't use it for a real person. The 'mort' part really stands out. I think of the word 'dead'.

My son (who is now 7) is called Mortimer.
I wasn't entirely sure of it at first, but my husband was keen.
We have quite a short, boring surname, so I think it flows well.
When he was born it just suited him perfectly.
He loves the name because he is the only Mortimer, and it suits his quirky unusual personality! He says he is glad we didn't call him Thomas or Alex like most of the other boys in his class.
Some people were skeptical when we first announced the name, but now they all agree it is just right. We call him Morty for short.
I believe it is French for "dead sea".
