[Opinions] Carrie
I was reading a short story and the main character had a little sister named this. I've never met a Carrie, and I think it's cute! WDYT of Carrie as a nn for Caroline? Please vote! http://www.behindthename.com/pnl/174843/112914 & http://www.behindthename.com/pnl/174843/112915

I prefer Caroline with no nickname, but I do like Caroline nn Carrie a good bit. I knew lots of them growing up in the nineties. For some reason, Caroline was ultra popular (still is) in my hometown and it was always used in full or with Carrie as a nickname. I think the Carrie nickname thing has died off with this generation, though. My name is Caroline and I've thought about naming a daughter Caroline and calling her Carrie. Ultimately, I always dismiss it because this is such a WASPy custom (giving the daughter the same name as the mother) and I am no WASP. Also, because Carrie could be confused with Kari, Kerry, Cary, etc. etc., and I don't like alternate spellings. And only as a nickname. Because it's been so familiar to me my whole life, I didn't realize it was dated to the 70s.

DH wanted to use it to honor Carrie Fisher but it's just so dated (70s) to me. I would prefer it as a nickname rather than on its own, but I prefer Caroline without Carrie.

Bleah. It was so popular on its own in the US in the 1970s that it's so dated to me. On its own, it's insubstantial. And I was never sure whether to pronounce it like the word "carry" or so that the first syllable sounds like the word "care".I did know a Carrie who was a little girl when I knew her, back in the 80s. She was a friend of my niece's. I'm just not wild about it, but I'd much rather see it as a nickname for Caroline than on its own.
