Hi !!!
I just commented a post by aussiechic04 asking about names ending with "by".
I think that Gatsby could be a good choice.
It is literarian and simple to write and pronounce.
It does not need any NN too.
The character is great imo and I think it could be better than Holden for example (as a name).
WDYT?
Can it be usable in the real life?
How it would be perceived in the English-speaking world?

Sorry, don't like it. I don't think the character was a great role model at all, and it does sound pretentious. I'm not a fan of last names as first names at all, but this one seems particularly bad.

I love the novel, but I think the character is too negative for it to be a good name.

I like the book but dislike the character. I feel he symbolizes dreams that belong in the past, holding onto materialistic images instead of allowing for true happiness. I think he'd make a tragic namesake. Actually I think all the characters in that book are unsuitable namesakes. Fitzgerald is a cool name to honor F. Scott Fitzgerald though.

I love the book, and the sound of Gatsby always appealed to me, BUT...
1) The kid will HATE being in his language arts class at the time when they read the Great Gatsby.
2) I know we decided we don't like this word, but I truly do believe it sounds pretentious on a child.

As I said in my response to you, I'm not 100% sure how I feel about Gatsby as a name yet. I think I'm leaning towards it being better for a pet than a child though.
It might work in the middle name spot, if the parents were a fan of the book/character (which I'm not).

Nope, not for a child. it would be an awesome name for a cat, however. :)

Holden, FTW. Gatsby is vain and slightly pretentious, and it sounds like "gassy", which I have never liked. I give it a "no".

It's way too tied to "The Great Gatsby" and it sounds unattractive.

I think Gatsby is kind of an awful namesake. And I don't love the sound aside from that either.

I personally think it would be better for a pet. I think it would be a cute way to showcase a love for literacy. But I don't love it for a child.

I think it sounds a bit pretentious, plus it has an unattractive sound. I definitely prefer Holden! :)
