I love Donovan but hate the prospect of "Donnie" and feel like "Van" isn't intuitive enough when Don is so ripe for the picking.
Donovan had a bit of a preppy vibe I think. I'm picturing a lacrosse player at a private school. It seems pretty on par with current trends without being trendy.
I'm in the American Midwest/south. Also, my first association is the singer (...they call me mellow yellooooow...)

I've been fond of Novan for Donovan since high school, as I've never been keen on the idea of Don/Donnie either. Since Donovan sounds more like don-oh-VIN, it would be pronounced like no+vin, not no+van. But that's probably less intuitive than just Van! LOL.
In response to Felie, I like Donovan, although perhaps not quite enough to use these days. Sometimes, I think it may be a bit dated, but it also seems like it could follow some current trends. I'm from the Southeastern United States.
