If you had to give one to a daughter, which one and why?

Venus. It seems more usable.

Aphrodite, just because I have visited her mythological "birthplace".

Aphrodite, because I have better associations with the sound of it...
Venus makes me think of "venal" which reminds me of "venereal" (disease).
Aphrodite makes me think of afros which reminds me of funky fashion styles and music; also, there's a female character in the Darth Vader comics called (Dr.) Aphra, and I'm enough of a Star Wars geek to see that as a positive.

Often the point of these either/or questions is to make you pick the lesser of two evils. It's fun that way. I'd never name a daughter either name myself. If I had to choose, I'd pick Aphrodite. I don't like it, but to me Venus is more of a term for a very beautiful woman than Aphrodite is, so Aphrodite would be less embarrassing.

It'd have to be Venus, I'm afraid, though I dislike both of them.
Aphrodite is too long to go unshortened, and it shortens to Aphro, like a wrong spelling of an old hairstyle.
Venus, apart from its tennis associations, was also the name of a very elderly lady I once knew; she was tiny and plain and had never married, but she ruled the local Scrabble club with an iron hand. So at least it happens IRL.

Despite the rhyme, I would use Venus for the astronomy touch over the more obvious goddess one.

Venus. It's way more goddessy to me, and not so associated with aphrodisia.
Also, it doesn't rhyme with penis, just as thus isn't this.

Venus, it reminds me more of the planet and isn't so much connected with beauty/looks.
