I pronounce them differently than each other. I love them both but I'd be more likely to use Amalia since Amelia is so popular. Around 15 to 17 years ago I started loving the name Amelia but then it became too popular for me to use for a future daughter.
A woman named Amelia would be adventurous and a bit nerdy in my imagination. It makes me think of Amelia Earhart and Amelia Pond from Doctor Who. I also used to know a girl named Amelia - I can't remember much about her but I think she is why I started to like the name. If I am remembering correctly young Amelia was good friends and neighbors with a little girl named Rain who my best friend in 7th and 8th grade named Laura used to baby sit.
Amalia is a name that I have only one association for. My sister had a friend from school named Mali who lived a few blocks away from us. Her name was pronounced basically the same as Molly. I learned that her full fn was Amalia and Mali was a nn just before they moved away because her father had recently died. Mali had freckles, blue eyes, wavy fluffy long honey blonde hair, and buck teeth. She was a very smart girl who took school very seriously and she was very nice. But I only slightly associate her with the name Amalia, I think of her more as Mali - or Molly because there was a year or two before I knew how she spelled her nn. She pronounced Amalia the Dutch way which I prefer to the German pronunciation.
