[Opinions] Pennywise
Hi !!!
As you know the movie 'It' based on the famous novel reached a wonderful box office.
I would like to ask you...
WDYTO Pennywise?
If it were not used in literature...what would be your thought about it?
Is it a good name for a pet maybe? What kind?
And on a fictional character totally different to a clown?
Would it ever been used on a real person (like all the Hermione, Daenerys, Gandalf, Severus and other fictional ones)?
Thank you in advance XD

Its a ridiculous name, movie or literature aside.
Pennywise brings one thing to mind for me: the evil clown. I can’t separate it from IT, both from the novel and the movie.
There's a counselor at my school with the name of Penny Wiseman and I feel extremely bad for her.
I have had too many nightmares about Pennywise the clown in the 21 years of my life to ever even be able to think of the name as a separate entity.
But if I could, I think I would probably find it very unpleasant sounding and too coppery to like even for a pet.

I really don't like it.
Calling somebody “penny wise” means they focus on small details and ignore the big picture (the whole phrase being “penny wise, pound foolish”). Apart from sounding ridiculous, it’s literally an insult. So no, I would not use it.
Thank you a lot for your comment!!
I did not know this saying.
I know how negative that character is but I thought that the name was something nice as Tinkerbell o else...(a penny is a little coin and wise means intelligent so my thought was kind of weird and quite childish melodious name)..I didn't know the negative link with the saying.

Penny wise is a common English expression in the phrase "penny wise and pound foolish." The saying means that somebody is careful about small amounts of money, but careless when handling a large amount.
So no, the name would not work on a preal person, and also wouldn't work on another character.
There is a famous women's health author called Penny Wise Budoff, however, the fact that some parents thought it would be funny to name a child Penny Wise (if Penny isn't a nickname for something else and she chose Penny as a joke) does not make it all right to give a person.
Penny however is a not uncommon name or nickname. It's quite dated now though. My mother's little dog is named Penny.

I think you would have to really hate your kid to call it that.
Yes now I think so.
But there are many negative figures whose names are used as names..
Mythological ones first of all.
ETA and what about on a pet, a fictional positive character or about the name itself? ^^

it's not mythological ...
The ONLY history it has as a name is the clown in It, and Pennywise the Dancing Clown is not even It's real name or identity, only the form It takes when appearing to humans.
So no, it could not be used as a name for a different character; it would be like creating a character and insisting his name is Harry Potter or Winnie the Pooh; it would be nonsense.
As a pet name, well, fine, but why?

Yes, the Swedish variant Loke is pretty popular, actually.
They are
It’s #452 in England and Wales, but I don’t know how many children that is.

Did you do that here or elsewhere? I don’t know where to find it on BtN, if at all.
90 is a small but significant number.
90 is a small but significant number.
You type in "Loki" in the search, click on "Loki popularity search", and there it is! Be sure you have it set so the chart shows times used.
I don't know if you can get it on the chart (weird) but if you go to this page, and click the "Times Used" bubble, it'll show in the chart:
https://www.behindthename.com/name/loki/top/england-wales/m
FWIW, 92 boys in the US named Loki in 2016 as well.

The popularity of Loki is low-key loco.
Sorry. I’m tired. Somebody please take my keyboard away.
