It's not cute at all to give twins similar names. I always feel like twins with similar names often get treated as one person in two bodies, which tends to drive them crazy.
I went to school with a pair of identical twins named Mario and Mariano and people always treated them like one person in two bodies rather than two separate people. It annoyed the crap out of them. The two of them actually have very little in common besides appearance. They have very different personalities (Mario is very social and outgoing, while Mariano is more of a loner). They even have different favorite colors (Mario's favorite color is green; Mariano's favorite color is purple). Funnily enough, they actually liked telling people the differences between them.
