Message: "Avacyn" - Behind the Name

This is the name of an angel from Magic the Gathering lore. She's not the best character, but I thought her name was interesting.

Anyway, thoughts? How would you pronounce it? I've been saying AVA-sin.

My first was "Åh, vad synd" ("ah, that's a pity" or "ah, what a shame" in Swedish). My second thought was "ever since". Then came "medicine" and Miss Avocet from the Peculiar Children's books.
Sorry, but I don't like Avacyn.

My guess is the vacyn part reminds people of vaccine...or cyn is reminiscent of synthetic.

I don't love it, but I don't think it'd stand out that much IRL. I see Ava + suffix, and I'm tired of seeing Ava.

I've always pronounced it AVVA-sin (with a short A). I'm not a big fan of it, tbh.

I like it. It sounds name-y and it's pretty. I'd pronounce it the same as you.

Looks more like the devil in Temptation Mode than an angel: "'Ave a sin, go on, you know you wannnnt to..."
I also wonder if she's got a sister called Anacin.

I'd say AV-uh-sin, not AY-va-sin.
I dunno ... it's just kind of ugly?
I'm trying to like it ... it's just failing, for me. I think my biggest issue is that -cyn looks like a respelling of -son.
It's like a mad name scientist took DNA from Ava and Addison and Evelyn, recombined it and injected it into a name-egg, and Avacyn grew. It's not a robust phenotype. Might thrive in a special atmosphere of fantasy gaming geeks, but would be overwhelmed in competition with Avalynns and Gracyns everywhere else.

Oh, so that's where it's from. I've seen it in the SSA data and assumed it was like a combination of Ava and Allison with a variant spelling. I'd pronounce it the same as you.

The sound isn't bad but -cyn looks medicinal to me. But Avasyn and Avasin don't look much better. Hm.

I think I'd pronounced it AVV-a-sin.
I don't like it because it looks and sounds like medicine. Avacyn may cause drowsiness so do not operate heavy machinery or drive while taking it.
