I really like Mercy as a name. No different or more word like than any other virtue names. Doesn't need a nn though.

I love love love Mercy as a name. Virtue names are a pretty established category, so I wouldn't worry.

Merry as a nickname for it seems weird to me, though, since it's almost just the name itself.

I know a Mercy who's about 13 now and I think it's come pretty naturally as a name for her. In my accent Merry and Mary sound different, but I know that's not the case for probably the majority of the U.S. In any case, I don't think Mercy needs a nickname.

Of course, it sounds exactly like a word. It's one of the word-virtue names of the Puritans. I don't think it sounds any more like a word than Constance or Grace do. Or Rose, for that matter.

I've always liked Mercy. I do think people would think Merry is Mary, and it would be a headache.

I like Mercy. I think its a much better name than the more popular Grace, Hope, or Faith. I don't really understand why it isn't as popular. It has a great meaning.
If you want something less wordy, you could go with Mercia, and a diminutive if Merry.

Too much like a word, and a word that used to be a genteel expletive! Just one more reason for using Clemency instead.

I love Mercy (I encountered it as a nn for Mercedes). I don;t think it needs a nn itself though.

I love Mercy, it's a beautiful virtue and not too commonly used as a word but not too out there as a virtue name. I don't think it needs a nickname but Merry would work.
(For a similar sound, I also love Mercer for a boy.)

It does reminds me of the word, but that’s a good thing imho. Mercy is a beautiful concept and I think that’s what makes this name. Mer or Mery (pronounced like Murray) would be an interesting nn.

I love both, they're on my long list. I work with a "Merry" that's a nickname for Meredith, she usually just has to say "like Merry Christmas" and that's it, not a huge deal. As for Mercy it's a beautiful and underused virtue name and I hope I meet more of them, good luck
