[Games] Saphirdufeu's Royal Congrats
Okay, I’m not entirely sure if this has been done before or not, but I thought I’d give it a shot anyway! So: a congrats game, but following a (fictional) royal family, set in medieval England, because I’m a bit of a history nerd. Honestly, it might have elements of other games blended in because I really have no idea what I’m doing, but hey-ho! Hopefully it’ll be good fun anyway.
(Also, I’ll try to add a little ‘story’ element with some random events, and writing a little is of course not obligatory, but would be greatly enjoyed!)
You’ll need dice from http://www.brockjones.com/dieroller/dice.htm
So, the initial family. The ages of the King and Queen are up to you - they can be as young or old as you like. For their royal House, use the ‘surnames’ bank.
The year is 1173

And now, roll d10 for children:
1 or 2: no children
3 or 4: 1 child
5 or 6: 2 children
7 or 8: 3 children
9 or 10: 4 children
Roll any die (apart from d3) for gender: an even number is a girl, odd number is a boy. Ages are up to you. All children this round will hold the title ‘Prince’ or ‘Princess’.
For this round, you can use whatever names from the namebanks you like, and however many you like as well: there is a masculine, a feminine, and a surnames namebank.

DH [27] King George Alistair of England, House of Montague
DW [25] Queen Lucy Beatrice of England, House of Fairchild
DS [7] Prince Edmund Frederick of England
***
George never hoped to be king - it was his elder brother, Andrew, who was heir to the throne. However, when George was 18, his brother died in suspicious circumstances during a hunting accident, and a week later, his father, King Henry, succumbed to a disease he has suffered from for several years.
Young George was crowned king two months after his father's demise, and shortly after, married his betrothed and childhood friend, Lucy. The marriage caused quite some strife, since the 16 year-old Lucy was merely the daughter of a Marquess - Andrew's betrothed, on the other hand, was the Spanish Infante Isabella, who was far from pleased that she wouldn't become Queen of England.
George and Lucy grew up together, and were as close as a boy and girl of their age and status could be. While George regarded his betrothed as a younger sister, Lucy had feelings for him, which she never confessed.
While at first, the King was loomed over by treacherous advisors, he came into the job (if ruling a country can be called one) quickly, and was a popular monarch.

King Edmund was not expecting to be king. As the secondborn son of the younger brother of the king, he had been raised in the countryside, and at most, he was expected to be at most a duke. However, this would all be proven untrue. In the summer of 1158, the king, his sons, Edmund's older brother and Edmund's father would visit France. On their way back across the English Channel, there was a particularly bad storm. Everybody on the ship drowned. The 15-year-old Edmund was now first in line for the throne.
A few months later, Edmund was crowned King of England. Edmund was an introverted boy, which made him not suited for being king, according to many people. Despite these doubts, the first few years of Edmund's reign was peaceful.
As Edmund became of age, it was clear that he was in need of a wife. Many options were presented, but in the end, Edmund would marry Matilda. She was near his age, and was the daughter of a powerful duke, helping Edmund gain support among the court. The two would have a child, a girl who was named Eleanor after her grandmother. Edmund was delighted, but that delight would turn into disappointment when Matilda would give him two more girls. Edmund needed an heir, and he would eventually be given one in Prince Frederick.

King Simon and Queen Margaret grew up together in his father's court. At no older than three or four, their nurses came together to let the little ones play. From the tender age of ten or twelve, Margaret started feeling funny every time Simon entered the room. As she hit fourteen, she realized what she felt: attraction. But she kept it hidden, knowing she would have little chance.
Much to her surprise, a couple years later at sixteen, she found out that her parents had betrothed her to Simon from before she could talk. She knew not every girl got so lucky as to marry the man she loved. She promised herself she would forever cherish the knowledge that her husband is indeed her beloved.
In the first year or two of their marriage, Margaret quickly found out that Simon didn't feel the same way about her. He always seemed distracted and treated her more as a playmate even at twenty. Not that he would always goof off. When he had business to attend to, he put on a very serious manner and succeeded quite well at his job. But when they were alone, he returned to his giddy youthfulness.
Due to his inattention to her as his wife, Margaret was surprised when she became pregnant. The instances of marital activities were few and far between and she thought for sure she would be the first woman in her family line not to bear children. When she gave birth to her precious Katherine, Margaret poured all her attention into the baby, forgetting entirely about her husband's inattention to her needs.
Over the following years, the pattern continued. Simon would perform his kingly duties, strong and serious for all to see. When he returned, he would play games with his wife and daughter, though most days Margaret thought he didn't seem to know that Katherine was his. On occasions family or friends would ask about their next child, Margaret would insist they engage and he would agree out of mere duty. Four years after Katherine, Margaret gave birth to Alice and five years after Alice, her first son.

DH [28]: King Rufus Edmund Geoffrey of England
DW [25]: Queen Eleanor Katherine Agnes of England (née Duchess Courteney) 'Nell'
DS1 [5]: Prince Thomas Ambrose Ralf of England 'Tom'
DD1 [2]: Princess Matilda Cecily Joan of England 'Maudie'
When Rufus was born, in a remote castle secluded by thick forests, his father was king - this came as a surprise to many, including said father. Edmund the Long had two older brothers, who had been groomed for kingship from birth by their father. By the time little Edmund came along, the succession was considered safe. He had been allowed to pursue his own passion in life - scholarship. He read books before breakfast, studied attentively during his lessons, and when his brothers were roughhousing outdoors and his sisters were embroidering, he read some more. He envisioned a perfect future for himself, travelling to the continent to study as his brothers took care of the kingdom, possibly marrying an intelligent but not overly powerful European noblewoman. And of course, because he had a plan, life took it upon itself to ruin everything.
When Edmund's father died, he was an awkward, lanky young man of 17. His eldest brother, Hugh, was 23 and had been preparing for this moment his whole life. His coronation was hasty but magnificent, and he reigned for almost exactly six months. Then, in the middle of the night, he was stabbed. Several times. Fifteen times, to be exact. Naturally, he died, and Edmund's second brother, Joscelin, took the throne. A year into his reign, however, it was revealed that it was him who had stabbed Hugh. The people and the nobility for once agreed: Joscelin had to go. And so, Edward, just barely 19, became king.
He wasn't prepared for this job. The country was plunged into chaos: justice seemed a distance concept, famine was common, and war broke out between nobles almost every other week. The situation improved as Edmund aged, but he never really grasped the finer points of kingship.

There are many kinds of kings throughout history. You have the traditional heroic sort of king, who slew dragons and fought against barbarian invasions and probably got their magic sword from some watery wench. Then you have the conniving sort of king, the ones born next to the previous king, who'd used cunning plots and a certain amount of backstabbing to seize the throne by force. There are also, although rather less celebrated by bards and historians, the reluctant sort of king, who'd recieved the throne the way a hapless child opens up his Christmas present only to discover three pairs of wooly socks and a sweater he'll grow into around next Christmas. These are the kings who didn't kill anyone to get to the throne, who never pulled any swords from stones and who firmly believed that Death does, in fact, hold court within the hollow crown.
King Richard happens to be this third type of king.
The truth was, he'd been pretty happy with his wife Beatrice in their draughty little castle out by the forest, so far up the mountain that even bandits would rather turn back and rob an inn somewhere than chance the corkscrew, snow-swept roads leading up to it. Besides, he was always supposed to just sit quietly out of the whole kinging business. His father had been quite clear on that. Louis was supposed to be king, not him, so all he really had to do was finish his lessons and eat his vegetables, and if he could marry someone important and get more power to the family, then that's all very well.
It was a neat plan, which of course meant it would inevitably fall apart, because history has a tendency to muck up neat plans with extreme prejudice. And so it was that three years after his brother Louis took the throne, a usurper assassinated him. Then, their middle brother Simon took it upon himself to avenge the murder and kill the usurper, which he finally did in a fashion, but not without himself dying in the process. Which left Richard, unaccounted-for, unexpected Richard, realising that the throne had fallen to him by default.

Not too late at all! :-)
A "KUY Congrats" like this ("keep up yourself") means you can post whenever you like.
And I like your story!

And I like your story!
I realised a bit late that this is, in fact, a KUY. Ah, dear me, it really has been too long since I've last been here. Cue the obligatory ramble about the olden days, walking uphill both ways, children on my lawn, &c.
And, thank you! I wasn't going for anything as historically accurate as yours--which, I night say, is verh impressive--but I'm having great fun so far.

EDIT: I'm providing a plot!
An Unexpected Match
King Philip I of Wessex and Mercia, an only child, has had his hands full in his young reign. He inherited the crown at the age of eleven when his father, King Fulk III, died suddenly. (His death has long been suspected to be from poison, but there was never any proof.) From then on, Philip was under the tutelage of his uncle Guy, Duke of Bath, who served as regent till he came of age. At the age of nineteen, King Philip fought valiantly in the Battle of Oxford (Oxenaforda) in 1163, in which Mercia was conquered and added to his crown. Eschewing the strategies of the previous William the Conqueror, he ruled the common people of the new territory benevolently in order to inspire loyalty, and through these "small folk" was able to sniff out many conspiring Mercia nobles. It would appear that Philip flourished under his uncle's regency.
Originally, Guy of Bath wanted his nephew to marry his daughter, Margaret, and solidify the family's influence in the realm (though many guessed rightly it would only increase his influence in the realm). Other advisers thought that Juliana Courteney, niece of the former Mercian king, would be a more prudent choice in order to appease Mercian nobility. King Philip put the decision off until he was 25, quite late for a monarch - but he surprised everyone by entering into negotiations with the Northumbrians, proposing a marriage between himself and Princess Edith, then 18, to foster friendlier relations with their northern neighbor.
Edith (Eadgyða), the youngest child of the King & Queen of Northumbria, was also the most rebellious. At a young age she was sent to an abbey and expected to take holy orders - though while her intellect flourished under the tutelage of the nuns, her questioning spirit remained unbreakable.

From then on, Philip was under the tutelage of his uncle Guy, Duke of Bath, who served as regent till he came of age.

King Owain and Queen Isabella were married twenty years ago. King Owain inherited the throne from his father, King Alphonse, at the age of thirty-one. Owain was eager to begin ruling the people, something he had been preparing for since before he married Isabella. Isabella is a quiet woman of few words, but well respected for her wise opinions. They have four living children--Prince John, Prince Adam, Princess Margaret, and Princess Katherine.
Prince John is nearing adulthood, and is hoping to rule the country one day after his father's death. He is also hoping to be married soon and begin his own family.
Prince Adam is also nearing adulthood. He too has political aspirations, but doesn't think he'll ever become King. He is very interested in serving on the ruling council.
Princess Margaret is the belle of the nation--beautiful, graceful, and intelligent. She loves to be the center of attention.
Princess Katherine lives in Margaret's shadow, but doesn't care too much. She is a quiet, bookish child who enjoys sitting with her father as he provides judgments and rules the country.

William was only four year old when he became King of Courteney under the regency of his mother following a tragic horse riding accident of his father. Already at that tender age of the King it was clear that the choice of the bride would be crucial for the Kingdom of Courteney as William was the only child of the couple and therefore the only heir to the throne of Courteney. He was not even five when the choice fell on then two years old Princess Alice of Sussex, the youngest daughter of the reigning couple of Sussex.
Thirteen years later the couple was married, the whole Kingdom celebrated for several days. Arranged marriages were nothing uncommon and both William and Alice knew where they duty laid. Nine months later Alice gave birth to the couple's first child Prince Frederick, the heir to the throne. Although both William and Alice would have wished to have another son, Frederick was followed by two sisters Eleanor and Beatrice.

The year is 1173, and King Samuel and Queen Adeliza of the House of Montague have just welcomed their fourth child, a daughter they named Eleanor. She joins her older brothers and sister: Samson, Annabelle, and Charles. Samson is the "ideal" royal child, taking to his studies and training with a sense of dedication not often seen on boys his age. Charles, however, Samuel and Adeliza can already tell, is going to join his mischievous older sister in shenanigans around the castle.

King Philip I of England has reigned for 3 years, since the passing of his father, Henry. Henry was a gentle-spirited man, pious and fond of the arts, but not particularly suited for kingship. When the throne passed to Philip, the country was in turmoil, with several groups threatening rebellion. However, his firm leadership and fondness of the law, as well as war, has meant that England is beginning to settle down again. Philip's Queen Consort, Adeliza, is of Norman descent and has a claim to some territories in what is currently France, but was once part of England's Angevin empire. Philip and Adeliza have a son, Arthur, and a daughter, Constancia, and have been trying to raise their children in relative peace and quiet.
