It would seem tragedy and joy are intrinsically intertwined. Just as Queen Mary was giving birth to her second child, she found out that her 8-year-old daughter, Princess Sigrid, was accidentally hit on the head with a ball by a playmate. The doctors were unable to stop the haemorrhage, and Sigrid died moments after the birth of her son, Quentin. The grieving couple decided to honour their late daughter by giving their newborn the middle name Lionel - a subtle nod to Sigrid's middle name, Leonia.
