This past winter was especially hard on everyone. The winds blew colder and the illnesses spread faster and hit harder. King Simon passed away as did Katherine's son Joachim and Margaret's husband, Theobald. Margaret nearly passed with her husband, but Maria nursed her back to health.
Katherine's childbearing days are preparing to wind down. A little older now than she was when she had Rosamund, Katherine has found giving birth to her last two children harder than her first six. Elysande and Geoffrey both almost didn't make it into this world, and Elysande almost took her mother with her.
When Valentine continued to exist in his depressed state, mourning his dead wife, Alice begged him to have their marriage annulled. The poor man didn't care much about anything and agreed because he didn't think it fair to Alice that she had to live with him.
The moment her annulment became official, Alice started prowling on The men who would gather at her father's house, noting which she liked and which she didn't. During state dinners, the thirty-one year old woman would lurk behind doors with a maidservant taking notes.
One day, as she hid in her usual place, a young baron not much older than her peered around the door too. "Who are you watching?" he asked. When Alice explained, he laughed and told her that perhaps she ought to include his name on the list too. "Baron Tristian of Esteney." Although Alice refused to put him on the list in his presence, the moment he left, she had the maidservant write his name at the top of the list.
It was less than a year later that the couple was married.
With his father's death, the crown passed onto Simon. The minute he buried his father, Simon set his own next task: find himself a wife. Unlike Alice, he didn't romanticize the idea of marriage. Instead, he did what any good king would and chose his bride based on what the connection would do for his kingdom.
Eulalia, his wife, came from the Somersets, a noble branch which had disconnected itself from the monarchy due to disagreements and feuds. With most of the original members of the family dead or dying, Simon's advisors suggested it was time to bring them back into the fold. The Somersets held great sway with the people and so Simon's marriage to the oldest daughter of the most powerful Somerset brought great joy.
Maria has lived a simple life with her mother on her father's property, though Margaret never told her daughter that the king had fathered her. Instead, she allowed Maria to believe her father had died of an illness. Maria has been happy to believe so and wouldn't have it any other way, as her lowly status allows her to marry the man of her dreams: Astell.
The couple grew up together. Astell would always check on Maria when she didn't show up to work in the fields with him. He would bring her berries from his family's bushes and take care of her when she fell ill. It only made sense that they would get married. Currently, Astell hopes to provide more for his fiancée and future wife than he has, but Maria promises that she will love him even if he can't.
